Chancellor Angela Merkel, Germany’s current chancellor, is a unique world leader.Raised in the German Democratic Republic (communist East Germany), she is the first of her kind to become chancellor, according to a German Translation company. She is younger than any of her predecessors and is the first woman leader of her country. During her first term, her efforts were stymied by her liberal coalition party members, but this changed during her second term. Now with new-found power as the leader of the most populous European nation with the largest economy, Chancellor Angela Merkel is in a position to make an important impact on the world stage.
The way she was raised has had a big impact on the way she leads the country. Brandenburg was her childhood home, where she was raised by her father, a protestant minister. She excelled in math and science at an early age, and had hoped to become a physicist. But the East German bureaucracy tended to hinder professional growth. Upon graduation from the university, Chancellor Angela Merkel took a job as a Medical Translation professional. Chancellor Angela Merkel learned how to work the system in East Germany, which probably prepared her well for work in politics.
Shortly after entering politics, Chancellor Angela Merkel was made a cabinet minister by Helmut Kohl. Kohl belittled her by calling her “the girl”, but Chancellor Angela Merkel continued to gain prominence in spite of it. In 1999, an Arabic to English Translation service revealed that Kohl’s party, the CDU, had received illegal contributions under Kohl’s watch. The millions were funneled to the party from two different sources. The main source was from illegal kickbacks from the Saudis and the other source was from a fraudulent deal. French translators revealed recently that the illegal funds were secretly transferred to Swiss banks in Geneva. Kohl became mired in the scandal but Chancellor Angela Merkel emerged unscathed.
Chancellor Angela Merkel’s popularity has increased over the years to the point where she now enjoys seventy percent satisfaction. With the support of the majority of voters, Chancellor Angela Merkel has concentrated her efforts on the environment and the German economy. Chancellor Angela Merkel has the honor of being one of only two German leaders to address Congress. Nevertheless, Chancellor Angela Merkel is bound to anger some when she decides whether or not to pull German troops out of Afghanistan. In a broadly negative assessment of her centre-right coalition, the ARD TV poll found 77 percent not satisfied with the start of Chancellor Angela Merkel’s second term, which has been plagued by rows over Afghanistan, taxes, and relations with Poland. However, we interviewed a financial translator for this story who suggested that Merkel’s low approvial is based on the financial crisis that has brought German debt to record breaking levels and Germans fear continued expenditures as the economy is slow to mend itself. Durring 2010, the government of German passed tax changes that gave firms attractive breaks. While some are deeply concerned that the government should not pass further tax cuts until new revenue projections become available, members of the FDP are calling for a new round of tax breaks.
While more negative reports come out about Merkel, she has decided to go into hiding and stop making public appearances. However, even as she is not making media appearances, there are spokespeople for the Chancellor who are speaking and indicating that Merkel is pleased wit her new coalition. When Christoph Steegmans was asked about how the Chancellor views her new coalition, he indicated, “The chancellor views the coalition’s performance as good.”
