Have you decided to take a break from normal life and do something different? Whether you are having a break before starting university, making the most of your retirement or simply need a break from your 9 to 5 routine, a gap year is a great opportunity to have new experiences. On a gap year people tend to go for a relaxing holiday over a number of months, or they do something that will enhance their skill set. Whichever one you choose, it is the ideal opportunity to go to a place you have always dreamed about visiting.
If you are looking to combine fun in the sun with visits to historical monuments and architecture, a European tour is ideal. Much of Europe is still out of the tourist regions that a lot of the British visit, so you are certain to have new discoveries. Italy presents visitors with a world of glamour and celebrity as well as beautiful art, architecture and nature. Further east you could take the train through Russia for a culture shock and a half. Whilst a lot of the continent is still plagued by poverty, there are pockets of wealth and splendour that have lasted since the time of the tsars. St Petersburg and Moscow are must visit cities where architecture, history and vodka combine. Taking yourself out of your comfort zone is what a gap year is for.
If you are in need of new skills to put on your CV that will make you a more attractive candidate for jobs, you can use a year abroad to do this. Teaching jobs abroad are very popular as are volunteering projects. Teaching English as a foreign language is not only an excellent skill to learn, it is also profitable, as once you are qualified you are paid. People with experience in different industries are good at teaching English as a foreign language as they have experience in communication, but Teflworld say that young and old alike make great Tefl teachers.
So do something out of the ordinary on your gap year. Sitting on your sofa for eleven months out of twelve with a couple of weeks in Magaluf doesn’t count as a gap year. Whatever you do, make sure you make some memories that you can treasure forever.
