As you can see from the above example, a broadcast cover letter is a great tool to ‘test the waters.’


It can effectively be used to target companies when the job applicant is unsure whether an opening exists.

This type of cover letter is also perfect to use when rumors are being circulated in industry circles that a position is about to come open, but when a formal announcement or posting has not yet been made. Sending in a broadcast cover letter allows the applicant to get a jump on the competition.

To be effective, the broadcast cover letter must be clear, succinct and focus on the candidate’s specific accomplishments.


This job candidate used selective use of bolded text to focus on his key achievements as well as bulleted text. Rather than state the job applicant will contact the employer on a specific date and time, the broadcast cover letter leaves the option up to the employer.
