Outlook for IT Jobs

Despite the fact that many information technology jobs that have been outsourced overseas in the last few years, careers in the information technology industry should remain favorable in the future.

Many positions will need to be replaced as professionals move into management positions or pursue other options

IT jobs fall into the following main categories:

  • Computer Programmers write the actual code ( instructions ) that make up a computer program. This is a highly specialized and skilled job that requires detailed knowledge of operating systems ( Unix, Linux, Windows XP ) and programming languages ( Cobol, PHP, Visual Basic, C++, SQL ).

  • Computer Systems Analysts resolve problems related to computers and computer software. A computer systems analyst may design systems and software in order to meet the changing needs of their clients.

    Their work may also involve running tests on computers and servers to determine the source of problems and then proceeding to debug computer systems. Analysts may work in a variety sub-related fields such as finance, education and science.

  • Database Administrators assist corporations and organizations with storing and organizing large volumes of data. Their work may also involve designing; installing and testing backup, security and integrity measures.

  • Other jobs related to the information technology field include web designers, webmasters, computer scientists and network systems analysts. Web designers primarily spend their time designing web sites while webmasters work on the production and access of websites once they are up and running.

  • Computer scientists usually work in fields related to the research and development of computers and computer related products. This type of work might include robotic systems, virtual reality and artificial intelligence.

  • Network systems analysts work with the Internet, local area networks, wide area networks and many other systems. Design, testing and evaluation make up the majority of work performed by network systems analysts.

Employment Prospects for IT Jobs

About 10% of all individuals employed in IT jobs are self-employed and work contract jobs for various companies and organizations. About half of all IT professionals work as computer systems analysts, while only 2% of IT professionals are employed in computer science positions.

Positions in information technology are found with internet service providers, the government, financial institutions and insurance firms. Consultants who work on a temporary project basis are becoming increasingly popular with employers who would rather pay a temporary salary than maintain someone on their regular staff.
