Industry Outlook for Physiotherapists

The employment outlook for physiotherapy work is expected to remain above average for the next several years. Individuals employed in the field of physiotherapy work with and treat a variety of health issues.

Persons treated by "physios" may suffer from problems affecting their:

  • Lungs
  • Heart
  • Bones
  • Circulation
  • Accidents
  • Illness

Other patients may include individuals who are physically and mentally challenged.

The physiotherapy treatment process invokes a wide range of techniques including:

  • Massage
  • Manipulation
  • Exercise
  • Hydrotherapy
  • Electrotherapy

Physios may also provide instructions to patients on how to perform exercises at home. They typically work an average work week between 35-40 hours. There may be some travel involved if the physio is required to visit patients in their homes in order to conduct therapy.


Employment Prospects for Physiotherapists

Hospitals, health centers, nursing homes and clinics as well as private nursing and health care services provide employment opportunities within this field. In addition, it may also be possible to open a private practice or consulting firm and become self-employed within this field. Training & Qualifications for Physiotherapists

Clinical rotations are generally included in the program, consisting of several weeks, along with classroom study. At the end of the program, the candidate will have obtained a Bachelor’s degree.

Entry into physiotherapy programs tends to be competitive, with acceptance going to those individuals with excellent academic records.

Many leading physiotherapy programs also recommend a record of volunteer experiences in order to be considered for admission.

Persons interested in this line of work should be in good physical condition and able to lift and carry heavy loads. They must also be able to communicate well and work well with people including fellow staff members, patients and family members.

There is the possibility for advancement within this field. Advanced positions include supervisory and management positions. Other individuals choose to open their own consulting practices. With advanced education and training, individuals may also be able to advance to instructor positions.
