Writing a resignation letter can be a quick and easy job

A well written letter will allow you to leave your job with style and grace.

The length of the resignation letter will depend greatly on how much you have to say. A quick and short letter might just contain the date you will be leaving.

You can also include a reason for leaving the job.

If you are quitting to pursue a career change, you can state that in your letter

If you have already had a discussion with your boss on this situation, you can restate your discussion in one or two lines on your letter.

You can address any special or outstanding issues in your resignation letter. You can also state your willingness to provide any help the employer might need while transitioning to a new employee.

Here is one sample resignation letter:

Dr. Tom Watson
Stanford Clinic
620 East 17th Street
Princeton, NJ 08540

Dear D r. Watson:

In accordance with our discussion, I hereby give you my two weeks notice of my intention to resign from my nursing position.

I have found a position at Allied Hospital that will give me a chance to put my Forensic Nursing knowledge I received in college to work. I am eager to gain more skills and advance further in my career.

I would like to reiterate my pleasure at having worked at Stanford Clinic. The learning and growing opportunities I received at this clinic are invaluable to me and I will remember my experience here for the rest my life.

Sincerely,

Ronald G. Ehrenberg

Remember to be polite and cordial in your letter. Maybe you hated your job and are glad to quit. However writing statements like ‘I am glad of getting rid of this horrible place and I hope I never come back here again’ is probably not a good idea.

You may one day want to return to work for the company you are leaving

If you leave on a positive note, you will in a better position with your boss.

At the very least you may need to utilize your network at the job you are leaving or you may need a reference note from your employer. A kindly thank you on a resignation letter will keep you in the good graces of your ex-employers.

Dear Mr. Connahey:

After much thought and contemplation, I have decided to pursue a career change and enter the Computer Science field. I am excited to be going back to college to get a degree and start a brand new career.

Therefore, in accordance with my employment contract, I hereby give you my two week notice of my intention to leave my position as Junior Accountant. Tuesday 3rd February will be my last day of work.

If you have any openings in the computer science field in the future, I would be very appreciative if you got in touch with me.
