42nd & Broadway New York, NY 55555 555-555-1212 October 22, 2007 Mr. Richard Gentry Human Resource Manager Poconos Resort 23 Cove Road Poconos, PA 55555 Dear Mr. Gentry: Destiny. I absolutely believe in destiny. Sandra Simmons and I were speaking on the phone last week. She told me that she had a friend from college who was opening a new repertory theatre in the Poconos and thought I would be perfect for the job with my diverse background in all areas of the theatre. We finished our conversation, and I was taking a sip from my cup of coffee....You could have knocked me over with a feather when I saw your ad in last week's Variety for a summer rep theater director just five minutes after we had gotten off the phone. When could we speak to discuss our mutual friend and this summer rep director position? Sincerely, Jordan Reeves Enclosure: Resume |

It usually helps to mention a mutual acquaintance in your cover letter. This is especially true in the case of the acting profession.
However, be careful to only mention it once and do not make it the focus of your letter.
Remember to let the acquaintance know that you are mentioning them in your letter.
